I don’t usually eat a lot of fruit, I love vegetables, but I always forget about fruit! If you are like me, then smoothies are a great way to pack a ton of fruity nutrition into your day, in a way that just seems like a treat. It’s always great when you can get some raw plant based protein in a smoothie as well, which brings me to my next point.
This post isn’t really about the delicious smoothie, rather it’s about one of the most protein dense plant foods on the planet, the amazing super food: hemp hearts! (also known as shelled hemp seeds or hulled hemp) Just 1 ounce of hemp hearts has 10 grams of protein, (that’s more protein than 1 ounce of chicken.) Plus, 1 ounce of hemp hearts has 21% of your daily need for Zinc, a mineral linked to an improved immune system, faster healing, anti-aging, even better learning and memory formation. An ounce of hemp hearts also has 45% of your daily requirement for Magnesium, which has been called the relaxation mineral. It may even reverse osteoporosis, high blood pressure and heart disease. One ounce of hemp hearts also has 15% of your daily iron intake and has been shown to prevent certain cancers. But wait, there’s more! Hemp seeds have also been found to reduce inflammation, suppress appetite, and give you energy. According to the World Health Organization, the ideal ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 EFAs is 4:1 and the naturally occurring ratio in Hemp Hearts is 3.75:1.
Guys, believe it or not, that’s not even all the facts I found, just the tip of the iceberg. Not to mention, they just taste like sunflower seeds, but milder. They are tinier than sesame seeds and can go on absolutely everything, from salads to ice cream. In something like a smoothie, you would never even know they are there, because they don’t have that intense crunch like a chia seed. These are truly the perfect food for humans, and lo and behold, delicious. If you can’t find them at your local health food store, just get them online. Hurry up, before you die or something!
Orange Mango Berry Smoothie with Hemp Hearts
Makes 1 big smoothie
5 frozen strawberries
3 big chunks of frozen mango
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
Juice of 3 oranges
3 tb organic raw hemp hearts
Blend. Sip. Relax. You just got a little younger.
